The Mental Health Counselor plays a vital role in advancing Atlanta Mission’s Christ-centered ministry by walking alongside individuals as they pursue emotional healing, stability, and restoration. Through compassionate, ethical, and trauma-informed counseling, this role helps remove emotional and psychological barriers that prevent clients from fully engaging in their personal growth, recovery, and life transformation. By providing professional mental health services within a multidisciplinary care model, the counselor supports the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—creating space for hope, dignity, and long-term change. This position models Christlike compassion, respect, and humility, offering a steady and trustworthy presence for individuals who have experienced significant trauma, loss, or instability. The Mental Health Counselor’s work directly contributes to safer communities, stronger families, and sustainable life outcomes by equipping clients with the emotional tools needed to heal, rebuild relationships, and move toward independence and purpose. The salary range for this role is inclusive of 3 levels of credentials: Master's Degree earned, Associate License earned, and Full Professional License earned. Please note that we determine a compensable starting rate based on Education, Licensure, and Experience. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Client Assessment & Intake Orients clients to the counseling process, program expectations, confidentiality guidelines, and therapeutic boundaries. Conducts comprehensive clinical evaluations, screenings, and assessments to identify emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. Assesses risk, safety concerns, and need for higher levels of care during intake and ongoing engagement. Clinical Counseling & Therapeutic Services Provides trauma-informed, strengths-based counseling services through individual, group, and family sessions. Facilitates therapeutic process groups and psychoeducational groups addressing emotional regulation, trauma recovery, coping skills, relationships, and mental wellness. Engages members of a client’s support system, when appropriate, to promote holistic care and sustained progress. Service Planning & Client Progress Develops, implements, and monitors individualized service plans focused on emotional and mental health goals. Adjusts treatment interventions based on clinical progress, client needs, and changing circumstances. Documents client progress, treatment outcomes, and clinical observations in a timely and accurate manner. Crisis Intervention & Risk Management Provides crisis intervention and de-escalation services utilizing evidence-based techniques. Conducts risk assessments and assists in the coordination of involuntary evaluations or emergency interventions when clinically indicated. Maintains client and campus safety through appropriate clinical judgment and adherence to protocols. Documentation & Compliance Completes all clinical documentation in accordance with Atlanta Mission policies, HIPAA, ADA, and state confidentiality laws. Maintains accurate, timely records within designated systems to support continuity of care and program accountability. Collaboration & Multidisciplinary Care Communicates client updates and treatment recommendations with interdisciplinary team members using Microsoft Outlook and Salesforce. Participates in weekly clinical team meetings for case consultation and coordinated care planning. Collaborates with internal departments and external partners as needed to support client outcomes. Program Development & Continuous Improvement Participates in clinical design and planning meetings to inform the continuous improvement of counseling services. Contributes insights and feedback based on direct client care to strengthen program effectiveness and service delivery. Position Requirements: Education & Professional Credentials Licensure (or active pursuit of licensure) is required for this role . All candidates and employees must remain in good standing with the State Board of Professional Counselors and be eligible to practice—either under approved supervision or with full licensure Master’s Degree in one or more of the following: Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, or a related field that supports the requirements set by the State Board of Professional Counselors New hires have 90 days to furnish the acceptance of their application for licensure from the state. On-site supervision is provided & employees in a clinical mental health counseling role have 5 years to become fully licensed. Experience Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in mental health counseling. Demonstrated ability to apply DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and evidence-based interventions. Clinical Knowledge & Expertise Strong working knowledge of the DSM-5, including common diagnoses and co-occurring disorders within vulnerable populations. Demonstrated competency in crisis intervention, risk assessment, and de-escalation techniques. Ability to interpret and apply clinical information from medical records, psychological evaluations, and psychiatric assessments. Ethical Practice & Professional Boundaries Ability to establish, maintain, and model appropriate therapeutic boundaries with clients experiencing trauma, homelessness, or complex psychosocial challenges. Demonstrated understanding of and adherence to applicable laws, ethical codes, and professional standards (e.g., counseling or social work codes of ethics). Communication & Documentation Skills Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to engage compassionately and professionally with clients, families, and interdisciplinary partners. Strong written communication skills to maintain accurate, thorough clinical documentation in compliance with Atlanta Mission policies, HIPAA, ADA, and state confidentiality laws. Organizational & Time Management Skills Ability to effectively prioritize responsibilities, manage multiple cases, and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Strong organizational skills to support documentation, service planning, and follow-up in a fast-paced environment. Collaboration & Interpersonal Effectiveness Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment. Demonstrated cultural humility and the ability to work respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences. Ability to respond professionally and effectively to sensitive inquiries, complaints, or high-stress situations. Special Job Requirement: While this position will primarily serve one campus, this position may require travel to additional campuses associated with Atlanta Mission for training and cross training purposes.
