Job Description:

The U.S. Benefits team is responsible for effectively delivering a competitive and cost-efficient slate of benefits to over 12,000 U.S. RELX employees in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

This is an important position at a critical time for RELX HR which is focused on realizing the right balance between business autonomy and strategic Centers of Excellence including CoEs for Reward, Talent Development and Talent Acquisition that will create more harmonization and opportunities for synergies and sharing best practice. HR has invested in sophisticated tools to continuously improve its analysis of data and decision-making capabilities as well as to improve operationalization of reward processes and benefit choices. There have been significant changes in the benefits offering in the U.S. over the last few years so ever more thoughtful and commercial direction and leadership is required to ensure continued improvements, employee satisfaction and cost efficiency in this environment.

The successful candidate will partner with key stakeholders, including executive leadership, the Reward and Talent Acquisition CoEs, integration HR leaders, and others to ensure that all programs and integration activities support the organization's strategic objectives, are competitive, cost effective and in compliance with legal requirements. This candidate will also take the lead role in M&A activity, including due diligence exercises and the creation and execution of the benefits integration plan.

High-level relationships are critical for success in this role. A strong emphasis will be put on an overall strategic approach for benefit design and positioning of the company offerings to improve the effectiveness of recruiting key talent and onboarding acquisitions. A strong understanding of current and potential future issues impacting international corporations and knowledge of government regulations impacting our business would be an important plus. Deep U.S. benefits experience with proven success in change management skills and strategic initiatives are essential.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Effectively translate institutional goals into meaningful benefits, wellbeing, risk management, and engagement strategy
  • Consult and advise the senior leadership teams to ensure the benefit programs and initiatives align with financial and social goals
  • Manage a team covering compliance, vendor management, employee escalation support, wellbeing, and communications to ensure operational efficiency of the benefit plans
  • Oversee the benefits due diligence efforts on Merger & Acquisition targets as well as divestiture initiatives
  • Coordinate and lead onboarding strategy for acquired employees, including recommending adjustments to increase integration
  • Ensure the health and wealth benefit program designs and overall strategies enhance RELXs employment value proposition and meet the needs of our population
  • Oversee the development and execution of a systems and reporting strategy that maximizes the department's use of information and analytics to make good business decisions


  • Master's degree preferred, bachelor's degree in a related field required.
  • Must have a strong foundation in benefits design and strategy, with significant and demonstrable prior experience working successfully in a role with similar requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Deep knowledge of the regulatory aspects of all benefit plans; ability to stay abreast of developments in a dynamic legislative environment
  • Understanding of the behavior drivers for health care, savings and retirement decisions
  • Knowledge of retirement and health care plan de-risking strategies
  • Experience communicating to employees benefit information and changes to benefit offerings
  • Experience analyzing M&A activity for financial and perceived benefit structure differences
  • Demonstrated proficiency partnering with and influencing business leaders; ability to drive towards consensus with a divergent group of stakeholders
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Sound business judgment and financial acumen
  • Strong understanding of and established relationships in the benefits market-place
  • Proven success in developing a high-functioning team of professionals
  • Highly developed and effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to handle challenging and ambiguous situations with a calm and assured approach
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality; strong ethics, integrity and judgment
