The role

The incumbent will report to the Manager Molding and Extrusion. The successful candidate will be responsible for design, development, and commercialization of molding processes and equipment for existing products and new medical devices. They will work with Marketing, Project leaders and Plant based teams to create/redefine products and associated specifications through innovative and robust processing solutions. They will also be expected to assist in quality system compliance and regulatory filings with the FDA and other agencies outside the United States.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in cross functional teams for design, manufacturability, production and delivery of molding and extrusion projects
  • Lead projects of various sizes and complexity from conception through manufacturing
  • Represent Avanos in business dealings with third party vendors
  • Provide regular reports to executives on project progress, delays or cancellations
  • Work in a dynamic environment with minimal supervision or daily direction
  • Participate in Lean/Six Sigma projects and processes

Your qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree and 10+ years' experience in molding industry - medical molding experience preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Hands on injection molding and tooling experience from design to implementation and sustaining production.
  • RJG Master Molder 1 Certification and extensive knowledge/experience with Scientific Molding principles and techniques.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 60% percent at times


  • Strong team-oriented professional with good interpersonal skills, communication skills, and project management experience.
  • Well versed in mold machining methods and molding technologies including hot manifold systems, E-dart, and in mold sensors
  • Experience providing design engineering assistance to project teams leveraging DFA/ DFM principles
  • In depth knowledge of tool design, troubleshooting, and molded component qualifications
  • Ability to identify molding and tooling and process efficiency improvement opportunities and present to senior management.
  • Ability to perform in-depth engineering and statistical analyses.
  • Experience in working with vendors and vendor management
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, Minitab, etc.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Solid Works to view and modify plastic part models, injection molds, and part or mold drawings.
  • Ability to mentor and coach less experienced engineers.
  • Working knowledge of Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing.
  • Application of statistical and analytical methods such as SPC, SQC and DOE.
  • General knowledge of DFMEA, PFMEA, and Risk Tools.
  • Working knowledge of GMP and ISO regulations (Design Controls).
  • Comply with applicable FDA and international regulatory laws/standards and the Avanos Code of Conduct.


  • 3+ years plastic part design experience.
  • RJG Master Molder 2 Certification.
  • Experience with insert molding and over molding.
  • Experience with two-shot and multi-shot tooling.
  • Experience with robots, EOAT and post mold automation.
  • Experience with vision systems and component inspection
  • Experience with silicone molding
  • Experience with extrusion
  • Rapid prototyping experience
  • Knowledge/experience with plastic joining technologies such as solvent, ultrasonic welding, adhesives etc.
  • Experience in Gage design, MSA and GRR.
