Perform physical and behavioral assessments upon intake. Work closely with the Shelter Veterinarian in monitoring animals for signs of illness, administering medications and vaccinations, and providing medical care as needed. Provide humane care for sheltered animals by feeding and caring for animals, creating and distributing enrichment, cleaning and maintaining kennel facilities and providing maximum comfort to each animal. Utilize PetPoint software extensively and documents animal health records timely. Deliver quality customer service in accordance with the Society's mission, goals and philosophy.

  • Consistently provide humane care and handling of the animals, in accordance with AHS established best practices policies, including adequate food and water, clean housing, and medical care
  • Assist veterinarian in physical exams which may include obtaining vitals, administering vaccinations, subcutaneous fluids, venipuncture and other medical duties as needed and prescribed by the veterinarian
  • Perform the intake of animals by providing counseling, wellness exam, behavioral assessment, and updating vaccinations, deworming and parasite preventatives for each animal
  • Assist in ensuring accuracy and completeness of records in PetPoint database
  • Administer and properly record medications daily as prescribed by veterinarian
  • Scans animals for microchips
  • Observe health and wellness of all animals, reporting animal illness or issues to appropriate personnel
  • Understand and abide by infectious disease protocols; ensure all animal housing, equipment and admissions areas are safe, clean and sanitized properly
  • Perform diagnostics such as SNAP tests, fecal floats, and skin scrapes when needed
  • Work closely with department staff and volunteers to accomplish AHS goals
  • Foster teamwork environment, aiding all departments as needed
  • Maintain a neat, well-stocked work area; Participate in cleanliness and maintenance of all common areas including the Pharmacy, Admission office, laundry room, hallways and Admission lobby
  • Provide excellent customer service to all patrons who visit or call AHS
  • Review work and audit records daily for accuracy and completeness
  • Complete course and obtain certificate as certified euthanasia technician within 12 months of hire. Subsequently, assist and perform all components of humane animal euthanasia, as needed, in accordance with all AHS guidelines
  • Other duties as assignedQualifications
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent
    • Minimum of six months experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or clinic preferred
    • Minimum six months previous customer service experience in an office or retail business setting a plus
    • Minimum of six months experience in a similar capacity in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or clinic preferred
    • Computer literate in a Windows environment; timely and proficient in sending and responding to emails in a professional manner
    • Requires humane handling of animals and the ability to read animal behavior; knowledge and ability ot properly medicate dogs and cats, a plus
    • Excellent written, oral communication skills
    • Desire to work with animals and people
    • Ability to work in a fast paced, high noise environment paying close attention to detail with focus and follow through
    • Ability to problem solve and exercise sound judgement
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Safe handling of cleaning supplies, chemicals and equipment in compliance with safety rules and in accordance with SDS rules required
    • Handle agency funds in accordance with established verbal and written agency guidelines
    • Physical efforts require constant bending, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodations
