Job Code: MTM Title: Molecular TechnologistRevised: 12/01/2018 Department: MolecularFLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Molecular SupervisorJob SummaryPerforms and interprets laboratory tests in the Molecular Pathology Laboratory for the diagnosis and care ofpediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.Knowledge and Critical Skills/ExpertiseRequires reading and knowledge of medical terminology.Language Ability - Ability to read and interpret documents such as patient requisitions, safety rules, operatingand maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.Math Ability - Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,common fractions, and decimals.Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished eitherverbally or written. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardizedsituations.Computer Ability - Ability to utilize MS Office applications (Word, Excel) for laboratory applications.Position Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure/Certifications)REQUIRED--- B.S. or B.A. degree in science plus successful completion of a formal technologist training program(MT/MLS or MB) and six months clinical or molecular laboratory experience. Acceptable certifyingagencies include: ASCP, AMT, AAB (HEW) *OR*--- B.S. or B.A. degree in science with appropriate credits in chemistry, biology and mathematics, toinclude didactic and laboratory molecular techniques such as PCR, Real-Time PCR, DNA/RNApurification, gel electrophoresis or DNA sequencing and six months molecular laboratory experience *OR*PREFERRED--- Completion of an appropriate clinical laboratory certification examination (MT/MLS, CG, M orMP/MB) and six months clinical or molecular laboratory experience. Acceptable certifying agenciesinclude: ASCP, AMT, AAB (HEW) *OR*--- B.S. or B.A. degree in science plus successful completion of a formal technologist training program andat least 1 year clinical laboratory experience *OR*--- B.S. or B.A. degree in science with appropriate credits in chemistry, biology and mathematics and atleast 1 year laboratory to include molecular techniques such as PCR, Real-Time PCR, DNA/RNApurification, gel electrophoresis or DNA sequencing.DocuSign Envelope ID: B8A86157-3054-4FC8-A941-AD99CB44A73DTasks, Duties and Responsibilities1. Interacts with physicians, employees and clients in a positive manner consistent with the mission andvalues of Bako Diagnostics.2. Follow the laboratory's standard operating procedures for job-related responsibilities.3. Technical:--- Evaluates patients' samples to determine their suitability for examination and/or referral to areference laboratory. Follows up or investigates events or situations with specimens which may leadto adverse test outcomes.--- Performs molecular laboratory tests, to include sample preparation, instrumentation and analysis.--- Prepares, monitors, and operates analytical test instruments to ensure that test results are medicallyreliable. Investigates and troubleshoots test results and/or system failures.--- Prepares and reviews test findings and results to be reported to physicians and other medicalpersonnel.3. Quality Control and other duties:--- Maintain a clean and safe prep work area according to guidelines of Infection/Exposure Control andChemical Hygiene guidelines and ensures proper disposal of all waste according to company policy.--- Monitors temperatures, services and cleaning of lab equipment.--- Supports departmental QA program by performing and documenting quality control andpreventative maintenance.--- Investigates and documents quality control and instrument maintenance problems.--- Performs proficiency testing for intra-laboratory comparisons, and to meet regulatory requirements.--- Assists in achieving and maintaining laboratory certification as appropriate.4. Support Responsibilities:--- Maintains confidentiality regarding all phases of laboratory work and findings.--- Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with company and departmental policies andprocedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafeconditions, or employee/visitor injury/accident to Manager.--- Maintains record keeping logs according to policy manual guidelines.--- Provides assistance to Data Clerks, Technicians, Client Services and Clients as needed to ensureproper specimen collection, handling, labeling, and processing.--- Unpacks specimens, assigns a number and documents a receive date.--- Unpack and stores supplies.--- Monitors inventories of supplies and reagents to ensure adequate levels are available.--- May assist with the orientation and training of other employees.Working ConditionsThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those and employee encounters whileperforming the essential functions of their job.
